Overheard....

while driving my kids to school....my daughter informing my son that "Mommy is getting in her older ages.".
(a response as a result of a broken promise secondary to mommy memory loss)

second-hand....my son informing his two grandmothers that his Papa "needs to take a chill pill".
(a response to Papa getting irritated that said grandson was drumming on the seat before him while waiting for sister's dance recital to begin)

second-hand....my son asking my mother to please "step out for a moment while he gets ready for bed".
(that coming from my son the streaker)

while sharing our night time moment together.....my son asking why "y'all (Mommy and Daddy) don't have to go to bed early like we (kids) do?".  my response, "Because we are grown-ups.".  my son's response, "oh yea, y'all can do whatever you want."  he continued to inform me that "God stays up all night."  my question, "Is that because He has to watch over everyone?"  his response, "Pretty much."

while making PW cinnamon rolls with my daughter on Sunday afternoon...."oh man, this is going to make a huge mess!"
(uh oh, do you think my mess-making anxieties are that transparent?!)

Tales from the carseat- Part Deux

Still no home computer.  I am getting a little frustrated with the whole thing.  I have been using my work laptop to stay online, but I can't do any posts with pictures until I get our computer back.  I am going to be soooo behind!

Here is an oldie that I had saved.  I type these in when they happen so I won't forget.  These span over the course of months.

I am thankful to share a little sunshine on this rainy day.

At dinner one night, A was asking about getting married and wondering who her husband would be.  I commented that God was already working on the right one just for her.  I think we discussed it a bit more and she kept mentioning that she really wondered who it would be.  L  piped in and said, "Just pray about it".  Well said!

L likes to ponder what he might be when he grows up.  One day, he said that he would get a job at the power plant where Daddy worked so he could get some money.  He casually concluded that he would still live with me.  I said that his wife might not like that.  He decided that he would live next door to me after he was married.

Does your child have one of those looks?  L has this look that cracks me up.  I usually get it when he is telling me something and I ask him some questions.  I am usually only asking questions to get him to think or to expand his story, but he does this eyes to Heaven look like I should so already know what he is talking about!

I was clearing my nasal passages one morning with the neti pot when L walks in.  He watches me for a minute and says, "Cool trick.  You could that in the circus.".

While watching TV one day, that Swiffer commerical comes on.  You know the "Love stinks" one.  L turned to me and said, "Hey, that is not very nice because God made your heart.".

I think there had been several discussions centering around how unfair it was that they didn't get to do something or go somewhere.  L exclaimed that when he was a Daddy, he would let his family live in a hotel and go to Chuck E Cheese all the time.  See why I am documenting this stuff?!!  I need proof in a few years!

L was playing with B and said that he was cute.  I told L that he was cute too.  He must not have liked that because he said, "No, I am not a baby anymore."  I told him that he was still cute.  He was quiet for a minute then said, "Well, sometimes when you are cute girls like you.".  I asked him, "So, do you want to be cute?".  He replied, "No."

I asked L to do something and he told me no.  (Yes, I understand what you are thinking right now.  We do work on respect.  He likes to test the waters sometimes and then tell us later that he was just joking.  Parenting is not easy!)  I asked him to try again.  He said, "No, Ma'me".  I asked him to try again.  He said, "Kinda, Ma'me?".

L wanted to play with my label maker and I had told him not right then.  He responded, "When you get old and can't remember anymore, can I have this?".  Sure, son!!  You can use it to label everything that I can't remember!!

Taking the kids to school one morning, we saw a group of men picking up trash on the side of the road.  I thought I might try to have a life lesson before 8 AM!  I asked the kids if they knew who those men were picking up trash.  They didn't.  So, I explained that those men were from the local prison and part of their job was to clean the streets.  We went on to have a discussion about that, but also about why they weren't wearing stripes.  They were wearing orange suits that day.  Later that afternoon, L found his Daddy's old driver's license that he had just replaced.  He looked at it and said, "Hey, Daddy was in prison??!!".  Wanna guess what color shirt Daddy had on in the picture?!!  :)

This past Saturday, I took A and B to the big town next door for pictures (9 months and 8 years old).  L stayed home and spent the day with Daddy.  We had a fun day of pictures, getting her hair cut, eating out for lunch, and taking our time at a few stores.  It was sweet to enjoy conversation with my daughter while we ate.  I let her have a special drink at lunch and after taking a sip, she exclaimed, "Tasty!".  Doesn't seem like much, but it was just cute coming from her with the perfect facial expression and new sassy  haircut to match!

Just to name a few

There are several reasons why I love having a 5 year old boy right now.

Who else would see the beauty after using door hanger ads to decorate our tree?!

Yes, I have left them up and he has added another one since this picture!
He was so proud of himself!

Of course, we have many interesting conversations each week.  Quite a few of them take place while he and I wait in carpool line for sister.

Just the other day he started in with this....

"Mom, when you get old, you have to wear a bib and diapers and it makes you feel like a baby again."

"Well, yes, sometimes that is true."  "Where did you hear that?"

"Mrs. C's grandma had to do that and then she died."

Life lessons start young!

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

Today, while waiting for sister in carpool line, I flipped through L's word cards as he read them to me. When he got to "ax", he stopped.

With great enthusiasm and wide eyes, he said,

"HEY, AX AND THE LETTERS TO THE ROMANS!!"

He was so enthusiastic and so serious about it that it just made me laugh and laugh.

Much needed, btw!

I tried to explain that they were not the same thing.

He went on,

"Ax like you chop stuff and Ax and the letters to the Romans!"

I agreed, but mentioned that they were spelled differently. I showed him Acts in the Bible and he spelled it out loud.

He nodded his head,

"Oh yea, I get confused sometimes cuz I don't know.

Good times!

I needed a good laugh

I was gone for several hours last night, so I had my husband take care of night time duties with the big kids. Little man hung out with me at a PTA meeting then at another meeting to plan church class activities.

When I got home, I went upstairs for a story and good-nights with the kids.

I was telling L that I had laid out his clothes for tomorrow because I wanted him to wear his "Big Brother" shirt. He has Show and Tell on Fridays and we got permission to "show" off his little brother. :)

I said, "You can wear your Big Brother shirt and he can wear his Little Brother shirt."

He said, "And you can wear your Big Mama shirt!"

Outta the mouths of babes!

We all giggled!

Tales from the car seat

** Here is another one of my hidden treasures. And it truly is a treasure to me! I started this back on 1.31.2008. I wanted to make sure to remember all the funny things they said. I just kept adding on and never shared before now. A lot of these come from my son L, but there are a few goodies from my daughter A as well. Enjoy! **

L-

I crapped my head open. (he had bumped his head)

Our house is cooking! (after watching steam rise off a boiling pot of water)

He likes to share wild stories of climbing and jumping off roof tops of houses as we pass by in the car.

He was shopping with me, and as we were leaving the store, we saw a shooting star. He asked, "What do you wish for mommy?".

The trees got ated. (probably seeing trees without leaves)

I overheard him in his room with his bible; He asked about the map and where we lived on it. I explained that we didn't live there. He said "but it is my bible!". Then I heard him preaching "a such a time as this and then when you die you go to God.".

Talking about his "powers". He thinks that the lights change and the automatic doors open by the "powers" in his hands.

Once told me that he was cold-blooded.

"I'm a very very good man."

As the communion plate passed, he said, "I smelled Jesus' blood.". (grape juice)

"Santa wants to go to heaven too."

He asked why the song says "hurricane knock my walls down". (He couldn't really understand why we would want that. I did my best to explain that it was about Jesus and our hearts!)

"I don't like old ladies. Is Gigi an old lady?" (probably got concerned that he wouldn't be able to like his Gigi!)

Described thunder as "God tooting". (hmmm!)

Commenting on my new necklace and said that the middle piece looked like a "brain on my necklace".

"I want new rules- Nice mommy. No spanking."

Wants to create a massage machine. (as spoken during our night time talks when I rub his back.)

Always wants to make his "special recipe".

I told him that he was being dramatic. He replied, "I have to be".

"I got skill." (describing his puzzle abilities!)

"I can't think right now." (when he gets all tongue-tied trying to tell me a story)

Loves to show off his "armpicks". (armpits)

A-

"I am wild about babies."

We were talking about Elvis and how their birthday is on the same day; and that he was dead. She said "Was he old or regular?".

Lots of conversations about Jesus and Christmas.

"Mstaticy" (can't remember what she was trying to say! any ideas?!!)

She likes to talk about growing up and having a baby. And of course, in true girl fashion, she has already named her first boy and first girl!

She asked how we get "chicken" to eat. When we told her, she said, "You mean the ones that go cock a doodle doo?".

Overheard her tell her brother, "You know that we are eating chicken. Like the ones that live in a barn.".

~And I am sure there will be many more to come!

Well, that makes my job easier!

For the last few months (although it feels like years and might only be weeks!), my son has made it clear what he wants for his birthday.

Every time he sees something cool on TV, he directs my attention to it. THAT is what he wants!

Problem is that at this point, my head is spinning with everything he has told me. These days, I pretty much just look, nod, and say "really!" or "cool" with as much enthusiasm as I can muster.

Every once in awhile, I will mention that he wants everything he sees.

It doesn't phase him!

A few days ago, as I was walking past him, he exclaimed enthusiastically,

"MOM, I want EVERYTHING at Wal-Mart that is for BOYS!"

I feel so prepared now that he has narrowed it down for me!

Funny Girl and Tough Guy

Since school started, I have tried to be fairly consistent with getting sunscreen on at least my daughter's face before letting her out of the car. She pretty much resisted most of the time. I would give her a break if I knew for sure they would not be outside that day due to weather.

With the return of pretty weather, I made the attempt last week. At first, she was all "yuck", "bleck", etc. After we were done, she did a quick take in the mirror and for some reason the expression on her face changed. She looked at me smiling and said, "Well, it does make my face shiny!".

After she hopped out of the car, I just had to chuckle to myself, thinking "Sister, if you only knew how much money women spend to make their faces not shiny!!".

Perspective!

*****************************************

This past weekend, my husband was out of town, so the kids and I stayed busy.

One of our activities included a early evening movie at the cheap theaters in the next town over. You can't beat a movie, popcorn, and drinks for 3 people for $11! We saw Hotel for Dogs and it was really cute.

Except for the parts I missed because my 4 year old son had to go to the bathroom FOUR TIMES, followed by my daughter one time (and of course, that did not include one of his four times!!). Even pregnant Momma only went once during his many trips! He probably really only had to go a couple of times, but was too excited to get back to the movie to really finish the job which resulted in our multiple trips!

Anyway!

There is one part in the movie where the foster brother and sister have to be separated. It is a little sad. So, I look over at my son and see that he is getting a little weepy. I say, "Hey buddy, are you crying? Are you ok?". To which he sighs a bit and replies, "No, my eyes are just sweating.".

Love him!

Movie Night

I am sitting here writing, at the same time listening to the rest of the gang watch a Superman movie I dvr'd off tv last night.

The ongoing conversation, or questions from the kids, reminded me to write this.

I have mentioned before my son's enjoyment of the Indiana Jones movies and his admiration for "Dr. Jones". We finished the series a few weeks back.

And btw, #4 was awful in my opinion, at least compared to the first three. And the whole alien thing. Ruined the whole thing all together for me.

Anyway, we will likely start the Star Wars series soon. Several people have mentioned that it is my duty since my son's name is a big part of that movie!

But all that to say, has anyone else discovered how difficult it can be to watch a more mature movie with young kids?!! And I don't mean more mature in a bad way, simply one that stretches beyond the cartoon-type.

It has been humorous and almost painful at times watching these movies with our kids. Of course, we have already seen them before but it would be nice to watch them again.

WITHOUT ALL THE QUESTIONS!!!!!!!! :)

Why...? Why...? Why...? Why...? Why...?
What...? What...? What...? What...?

(I will let you fill in the rest of the ????)

I can't even tell you how many times we said,

"Just listen." "Just watch the movie." "Shhhh, you are missing it."

4-year olds and 7-year olds sure ask a LOT of QUESTIONS!!

Oh well, I guess it is the price we pay for sharing the classics with our kids.

"Mom, Look at this!!!!"

When my son watches TV, you can almost bet you are going to hear this!

He loves him some "As Seen On TV" products!

Most are things he thinks he NEEDS! Other times, he is just looking out for the best interest of his family.

He would love a Snuggie and thinks I could probably use one too. Good thing they are "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" right now!

Of course, he really really needs Aqua Dots and a Hover Copter.

There are about a bazillion other toy-like things he has his eye on for both him and his sister, but I almost went blind trying to find just a few on the official website! It's crazy!

After watching his Gigi kill a huge plant this summer, he just knew she needed the Aqua Globes.

He thought the Instant Flower Garden looked really cool this summer. And I must admit, I almost ordered it because gardening was not at the top of my list this year.

He is also sure that I would love the Memo Mate or the My Little Reminder.

When there was a dog at his grandparents, this Pedi Paws was high on his list.

He got the Rocket Rod for his birthday, but it was a flop. Don't bother!

His Daddy really needed the Weed Claw.

I am just thankful he has not discovered the The Clapper commercial. Can you imagine one of those things in a house with a 4-year old boy? It has taken us over a month for him to stop playing with the automatic van doors!

I am more thankful that he has not seen the Ageless Woman commercial!

His latest fav is Bendaroos. I have always used Wikki Stiks with my kids in therapy, so I do think they are cool. He keeps reminding me that they don't stain or make a mess.

He might have made a sale!

Whose your turkey mama, now?!!

Apparently, I forgot that when you are pregnant, you can have a tendency to forget.

Which appeared to be the case when I signed my dtr and myself up for the annual Turkey Trot at her school.

It involved running a race with your child against other children and their parents.

Apparently, I forgot that I would still be pregnant!

But let me just tell you that 4-month pregnant girl can run!

She can't win, but she can run!

Out of the whole 1st grade, only 6 girls were signed up. My competitors included 4 men and 1 nice grandmother.

I felt good that I might at least have 5th place wrapped up.

The girls ran 400, then the parents finished the last 400.

I pulled through the finish line in 4th place, narrowly missing 3rd as my legs weakened and a guy edged past me at the last minute.

Which bums me because my dtr actually won her part, leading the girls' pack as they tagged their parents!

She rocks!

And today, I will be soaking in rock salts!

I voted.

Yesterday.

My little man got to help me.

Want to know his favorite part?

Getting to actually touch the GRAND OLD FLAG!

(I just type it the way I hear it!)

Both of my kids have been learning the song at their respective schools. I get to hear them practice. A lot! I need to write down their versions one day while they are singing before they actually start singing all the real words! L's is particularly humorous!

As we drove away from the election place, he continued to impress me even more as he told me:

* The flag has 50 stars.
* Because there are 50 "stakes".
* The Texas flag only has 1 star.
* And that Texas is a state.

The brain of a 4-year old continues to amaze me!

Especially when I have to ask myself WHY I would find said 4-year old "washing" his hands in the toilet water that he just did his business in.

Thankfully, all solids remained intact.

Momma just about lost her lunch though.

I know you too really want to ask "WHY?".

Can we ever really know or understand the grossness that comes with boyhood?

I have to go wash my hands again just thinking about it!

Stacey

p.s. The fact that he really did know better furthers the uselessness in even bothering to ask "WHY?"! All I can say to his future wife right now is that I am trying. I really am trying! :)

Tell your Momma to get her own blog!

Some people have such nerve!

They find out that you are famous and expect all kinds of favors!

Just take these two innocent-looking characters, for example.

Just because their wife and momma is one of your good friends, they seem to expect you to plaster them all over your blog.

I think his exact words were, "I want to be on your blog.".

Well, there you go!

I hope you both enjoyed your 2 minutes of fame!

*****************************************

OK, OK!

That was fun!

K is one of my sweetest, dearest friends who is a faithful and always-encouraging reader! I just didn't realize some of her family stayed caught up here as well! So, of course I am totally teasing them! I mean how cute is that sweet girl of hers!

I keep telling her to start her own because she always has a tale to share. Usually about some crazy thing she has gone and done! Her latest one was quite a doozy, but I will never tell in hopes that she will one day! Suffice it to say that she earned her key to the Golden Gate a few weekends ago!

Come on K! You can do it!

The saddle feels broken, but I'll jump on anyway!

My house is atrocious and I have a to-do list that is acting like rabbits as I type.

But I wanted to get back in the groove, so here is my lame attempt.

Two funny stories.

************************************************

Earlier this month, I finally bought my kids new tennis shoes.

After discovering that their toes had been suffocating for an unknown amount of time!

Later that night after bath time, I discovered this:

I guess they liked them!

(Sorry for the skin action!)

**************************************************

When my grandmother was visiting, we experienced a chilly day. I decided that it would be the perfect time to make stew. Over the last few months, I had been freezing leftovers in glass jars in anticipation of this day. I had corn, green beans, broccoli, tomatoes, tomato juices, beef broth, roast stuff (meat, veggies, and broth), and more! Plus, I threw in some leftover hamburger meat that I had cooked a few days before.

I was getting so excited as I defrosted it all and watched it start to simmer in the pot! Unfortunately, I forgot my husband was in the kitchen as well, and soon I started hearing grumblings about old food and food poisoning. He doesn't really get the freezing potential of most foods.

So my word of advice if you have a picky husband too.........

Be discrete. Be very discrete!

Because oh.my.word!

It was some delicious stew!!!

I enjoyed almost all of it myself that week!

Back to stocking up again!

The Pile

Do you have one?

I have about ONE MILLION of them!

Or at least that is what it feels like some days!

After unpacking and organizing the office this summer, I created a huge pile of papers that needed something done to them.

I am notorious for dog-earring magazines with ideas, products, websites that I want to remember. I am also one of those people that jots things down on scraps of paper. And then there was tons of contact information that needed put in the computer. A few pieces of memories were in this pile too.

With the rain all day on Saturday, I found a bit of time to FINALLY go through the pile!

I love the end product!

That is my office trashcan filled over the top!

Now grant it, I still have a pile to be filed from all this work I did, but at least I have a open cubby space in my computer table!

One of the funny things I found was an OLD list I made my senior year in college.

Let's LOL together!

Watch your back, John Travolta!

Near the end of summer, my kids decided to take the stage one early morning.

I should have video taped!

There are some serious moves going on here!

All to a little Boyz In The Sink playing in the background.

I don't know what it is about wood floors that has caused my son to channel a break dance spirit from the 80's.

Since moving here, he will find any opportunity to bust a move!

Seriously, there are days that my husband walks in and he says, "Hey Daddy, watch my moves?".

Oh dear!

Waiting for his musical cue

Can't you just visualize the swift leg moves my girl is doing in the background?!

I had the giggles all day after this one!

Self-induced Insomnia

It is never a good idea to watch a movie like Zodiac right before you go to bed.

But it does help to take an AdvilPM so at least you won't be creeped out by all the house noises for too long!

Back next week after vacation!

I know you are anxiously awaiting all my pictures!

At least I am not inviting you over to sit in front of the the big sheet as we go through hundreds of slide shows.

Have a good weekend!

Where two or three are gathered....

you might want to have a marriage counselor present!

I should know better.

Anything that involves nails, a hammer, a man, a woman, deciding on proper picture arrangement, and putting holes in the wall is a sure way to find yourself in divorce court!

Just kidding!!

(or not)

If you are puzzled because you can't imagine why this is a difficult situation, then let me just paint the picture for you.

(ha, look at me, a pun!!)

Me: We need to get all these pictures hung up today.

Him: What? You didn't tell me that!

Me: Yes, we talked about it last night.

Him: I don't think so.

(As you can see, this is going really well from the start!)

Me: Layed out all the pictures/decor to be put up in son's room.

Him: Comes up to room with drill, hammer, and wall hanging stuff.

Me: I was thinking about this here, that there, etc. What do you think?

(Yes, I know, mistake #1 is asking his decorating opinion! He thinks This Old House. I think Divine Design.)

It went on like this for some time. I won't alarm you with the details.

There might have been yelling involved. Yikes!

We got most everything hung up in our son's room, but at one point, I just put the last few things back in the closet and was ready to call it quits. I was overwhelmed with making decorating decisions.

With a man.

We then moved on to the hallway. A simple lining up of our kids' annual pictures down the hall. All in like-minded black frames. No big deal!

By the end of the task, it was comical.

Each picture ended up 1/2 inch higher than the last. Despite a yard stick, a leveler, and two intelligent adults.

Well, maybe one.

JUST KIDDING!

We would love to have you come admire our finished work!

Just don't do the picture-tilt test!
Looks can be deceiving!
