I just received excellent customer service and wanted to make sure everyone knew about it!
In case you didn't know it, Mardel's is having a 1-day sale with 20% off quite a few things; educational, kid's, school supplies, homeschool supplies. You can make your purchase either online or at a store near you.
Which is what I was trying to do when it got complicated.
The closest Mardel's is 45 minutes away.
And I wanted to use 2, $10 gift cards that I had received eons ago (my previous church gave them as teacher appreciation gifts one Sunday).
I started to make my purchase online until I realized that I couldn't use my cards.
So I called a store, hoping to use my cards, but knowing I probably couldn't take advantage of free shipping. You can get free shipping with online orders over $25.
The first store, the one closest to me, would not do phone orders.
The second store, the one in the town I use to live in and go to church in, ROCKS!
Not only did Bob, the store manager, agree to do a phone order but he also ran my gift card numbers through as well.
Yes, I had to pay shipping, but it was worth it to receive the customer service he provided.
I got 20% off all but 2 of the items I ordered and got to apply my $20 in gift cards.
In the end, I saved an extra $10 off my discounted order.
But best of all, I got to deal with someone that cared enough to make the effort for a customer!
So, if you need to order from Mardel's, may I suggest the Mardel's in Lewisville, TX.

The Perfect Bag
No, I haven't found it yet, but it sure is fun to experiment along the way!
I had been eyeing this Ashley Judd purse for several months. So when the price took a nosedive recently, I snatched up one of the last two. I love a good bag (and a good shoe!), but really try to stay reasonable in my purchases. I would say I did good for $20!
Isn't it yummy?!
And I think when I get done using it as a purse, I might stuff it into a big square pillow! I am only half-way joking! I absolutely love the fabric design and it has a wide leather strap plus great leather piping around the edges.
It is basically just a big open space inside, which means I will probably tire quickly of digging. I think I may take the Emilie Barnes approach. I heard her speak one time and when she started talking about purse organization, then pulling out all the individual bags from her one large bag (and there were a lot!), I knew she was my kind of gal!
Oh well, I can be sassy on the outside and practical on the inside!

Blue
In an effort to not be the totally boring Mom this summer, I told the kids we would go out and pick berries on Monday.
My dtr's first question and #1 concern was about whether or not the berries were poisonous.
My first indication that it is quite possible she has seen one too many princess movies!
Other than that, they were both excited.
We got extremely lucky because it was overcast on Monday and even the humidity did not show up until after we were done picking.
We headed out to The Greer Farm and discovered large berry fields, a huge lake, and a great piece of property that offers much more than just berry picking! I was excited to learn that we could even eat the berries off the bushes because they are organic people!
In the fields, they provide picnic tables, fresh cold water, wagons, picking buckets, and bags to load up with berries. I was so proud of the kids because they were real troopers and did a great job helping me. We covered 2 rows of blueberry bushes and 2 rows of blackberry bushes. They actually managed their own buckets of blueberries and then assisted me while I picked blackberries from the thorny bushes. Some of the blueberry bushes were so full in places that I simply set by bucket under a branch and gently racked lush blueberries off into the bucket!
In the end, we gathered enough to make 12 cups of blackberries and 26 cups of blueberries! All for $27!! $2.75/pound of blueberries and $2.25/pound for blackberries! That is CHEAP! I may even go back for more soon as the picking will end in about 10 days.
After cleaning and storing all the berries, baking some pastry shells, and making some homemade whip cream, we enjoyed a real treat Monday night!

IHOP, UHOP, WeallHOP!
Today is National Pancake Day over at IHOP!
For each donation you make, you are welcome to order a free short stack of pancakes! IHOP is raising money for Children's Miracle Network in 2008 and they need our support.
And we need pancakes, right?!!
My kids love going out to eat, and I think we have conditioned them too much for it without emphasizing what a privilege it is to eat at places other than home. We really DON'T do it all the time, but probably more than we should lately.
When I mentioned yesterday that I wanted to treat them to a pancake resturant the next night for dinner, my daughter said, "But I want to go to a real resturant!".
It is not like we don't have breakfast for dinner on occasion, so I think she is just in a complaining mood!
I need to keep teaching that girl about FREE!
AND about helping others!

Beginning with the end in mind
If you don't already know this about me, then today I will share again my love of shopping at resale shops. OK, yes I love to shop other places as well, but I am nothing without my bargains!
I have posted several times about some great deals I have scored in the past, but don't have time to go find them for linking here. One of my blogging goals is to go back and relabel then organize my posts for readers.
But that is for another day!
Anyway, resale shopping has become a recent love of mine, and although I don't go often since I usually have kids in-tow, I do love it when I walk out with great deals like a $7 bicycle that my daughter LOVES or cute clothes that cost less than $2 a piece!
So, several weeks ago, my favorite place advertised a "50% midnight madness sale with LOTS OF NEW TOYS!". Now most of my shopping was done and my kids certainly don't need new toys, but I had to go see what bargains I might find.
Little did I know this would be an after-Thanksgiving Wal-Mart dejavu experience.
Only better!
Seriously, these people had their act together; carts or buggies, a number system if you wanted to store your stuff and go shop more, cookies and cider, and friendly, helpful people! Who knew that still existed!
I mosied in at 6:10 pm (shopping was from 6-11pm) to find, um, madness! Apparently, they had lined up prior to 6pm! Despite my late start, I was soooooo pleased with my results! Apparently, the store had received many generous donations in bulk, so there were lots of new items to choose from along with the regular donated stuff.
Before I share some of special finds, I wanted to make it clear that all of this is NOT entirely for my kids nor is it all for THIS Christmas. After re-reading yesterday's post, it seemed like I was eluding to the idea that my kids were getting all of it. I have talked before about my gift closet that I keep stocked for birthdays, special occasions, and Christmas. Everything in there is purchased at 50% off at least, most of it at even better bargains than that!
Not that I think my friends and family are cheap!

And my loot from the other night.....
All purchased at 50% off! I got all this, plus 2 games you don't see cuz I already gave them away, and 3 pairs of jeans ($1.50 ea!), a pair of leopard pants with fringe, and an authentic-looking Pocahontas outfit for next Halloween for my dtr, and 2 pairs of pjs (less than $3 ea) for each of the kids for $129.
People, I don't know what you consider a bargain and it is not like I needed to run out and spend that money, but I think I did good. And when I even impressed my husband while at the same time spending money, then I did indeed do good.
I am so covered for the next year!

That is my cute new stool I bought for $5. Although it looks OK now, the seat is actually a little worn and I bought it to recover because I really loved the legs on it. Which you can't see!

This one may never come out of the package! I love this stuff! Ever since doing my daughter's nursery in Dick and Jane, I can't get enough of it! $3 folks!
I got 2 of these for $7.50 each. L's birthday is June and one my nephew's is in July, so these will be perfect!
L has a new love of dinosaur's, so he is actually getting this one in a few weeks! I think this one was $7.
He loves his Papa's tractor, so he will love this when it shows up for his birthday as well. Again, $7.50.
Games are my theme right now! All at a good price! Some for us, but most will be for birthday gifts throughout the year. It seems we have a party every other week!
If you go back up, I am especially proud of that cute barn stand I scored for $20! There are no stickers on it, so I can't even guess where it came from or how much it cost originally. However, it is a good solid piece and I bet it was a good deal! Yes, this one will be for my kids along with the lemonade stand I found for 75% off awhile back. Not sure for what occasion, but I love to encourage their play and these will do nicely!
Anyway, a long story to say, you can give a great gift at Christmas or any other occasion by simply shopping at your local resale shop! I prefer the ones that benefit a cause!

Making my list and checking it 5,000 times!
This is my crunch week for getting Christmas stuff finished.
I need to finish the shopping & wrapping, make some returns, get the cards in the mail, make ready for several party situations, get the kids prepared for their Christmas stuff at school, and manage all your last-minute head spinning stuff!
All are tackles that need to be ticked off my ever-growing list!
I did start with something fun last night after getting the kids to bed.
All this
was being hidden in my closet after my crazy outing to one of the local resale shops last Friday night. They were having a 50% off Midnight Madness Sale.
And you will get to hear all about it.....
tomorrow!
But for now, just know that most of it is safely hidden in black trash bags now until each one is ready for use. The few items that are for this Christmas have been re-hidden until later this week when I wrap!
This is another gift pile I am tackling this week. Most of it is going to other people. Other people as in not my children, so I don't feel pressured to hide it. Other than beside the guest bed!
And this of course all these!
Most went out today, but a few that will include this single photo (because I ran out of my photo cards after licking #125!) will need to go out in a few days!
Tomorrow, I get to tackle shopping.
ALONE.
FOR 4.5 HOURS.
While my kids are being fed and loved by some empty-nesters from my church. I am going to tackle quickly so my girlfriends and I can meet at Starbucks as part of our "alone" time!
But I am not excited.
Nope, not me.
Then tomorrow I will tackle preparing for my much anticipated GNO(in)-Christmas Party at my house on Thursday. I am hosting but the girls are bringing food in addition to my Le Madeline Tomato-Basil Soup. I will share our lovely evening with you later this week!

She shoots! She scores!
Yes, last night I DID go to bed at 8:30 PM.
On purpose!
Cuz lordy I was dragging all day after my 4:00 AM adventure on Black Friday in a small town!
You know, I am a nice person. Really, I am. And truly, I went with a calm spirit. Reminding myself that it was no big deal, enough to go around, you get what you get and you don't throw a fit.
But when the redneck girl threw me some attitude as I patiently waited for my loot, well....it could have been ugly.
But it wasn't. I.just.kept.breathing.
My MIL and I started at Wal-Mart where we immediately had to part ways in order to get in our respective lines for waiting. She went to toys (which was in cosmetics) and I went to electronics (which was in....electronics; go figure since all the other special blitz items were stacked in odd places all over the store). In each section, the areas were roped off with yellow tape until 5 AM sharp. And they were indeed guarded by the law!
So! I got in LINE like we were SUPPOSED to do like the nice lady TOLD us to do while she also TOLD us to relax, DON'T rush the counter, DON'T be grabbing, she would be handing electronics out ONE.AT.A.TIME otherwise someone or something was going to get hurt!
And then a funny thing happened.
SOME people started making their OWN lines. Their own lines that were in no way part of THE LINE I was in. Oh, I could feel my chest start to tighten. So, I politely asked the stranger lady behind me to watch my cart and purse (we were tight like that!) and casually walked up to politely ask the officer for a clarification on the line issue. He.wasnot.helpful! OH, but the nameicantsayoutloudhereonthisfamilyfriendlyblog WAS MOST CERTAINLY HELPFUL as she threw her uneducated wordicantsayoutloudbecauseyoumightthinklessofme opinion of my question back my way.
Thank you. Thank you very much for your ignorance!
So, I continued to wait where I was supposed to wait and quietly wondered to myself if the saying really was true that "the first shall be last and the last shall be first and the meek shall inherit the earth" (paraphrasing one of my favorite books, of course!).
And yes, yes there was the mad cow rush to the counter. And yes, yes I did have to get a little assertive. In a kind way, of course!
Because, in my humble opinion, this was worth it.
I would like to introduce you to my new little friend
Kodak EasyShare Z710 Digital Camera
And she was willing to be my friend for the mere price of $149. She liked me enough to not make me pay the regular retail price of $229 for her friendship. (And if you got a better deal on this item, please don't tell me cuz it might make me cry that she gave herself away cheaper to someone else!)
This is indeed my first digital camera, so y'all better stand back from the bright light of greatness you will start seeing around this here blog real soon.
Cuz I have been getting to know my new friend real well!
And while the friend I really wanted could not come play with me cuz she was asking over $600 for her friendship, I am happy. And maybe one day we can all be friends!
OH, back to my shopping!
We did well. My MIL went totally overboard on her only grandchildren. My 2 kids! I was able to get gifts for my MIL, my mother, my kids, my niece and nephews, and the kids in my coop group plus a few other special kiddos in my life.
We then went to Goody's (small town y'all!) where I took care of my kids, my FIL, and myself ;)
And finally, we headed to Staples two doors down in hopes that few others had mad rushed in to grab my other two new BFF's

Guess they will continue to enjoy my phone for taking pics. I really wanted to get them these handheld DVD players for car trips which were super duper cheap, but I was vetoed by someone who doesn't regularly make long trips with the kids!
And while I really want to share my frustrations about trying to find the kids the few items I really wanted to get them this year without supporting China, I will save it for another day! I will just say that we need some serious electronics making going on here in the USA!!
Along with the stories I have stored in my brain from this long holiday week!

Only time will tell....
you how crazy I am!!
I hope y'all will forgive me for bailing out of another FF; for real this time cuz it won't even be coming later.
Last night, I was sitting around planning my last meal of the day.
Or otherwise known as my Pre-Shopping Day Meal.
I needed to plan wisely; making sure I had a sufficient ratio of protein and carbs to fuel my Shopping Day race.
Although I do tend to try and hit a few Black Friday sales each year, I don't go all crazy about it. Only one year was I one of those hard-core shoppers with spikes strapped around my elbows and wearing roller skates for speed. This year, I have a list ready in hopes of snatching a few good deals.
We are in a small town for the holiday, so my choices are limited to Wal-Mart, Goody's, Bealls, CVS, and Staples. And since they all exist on one street, at least our travel time won't impede us.
So anyway, I went to bed early in anticipation of my 4 AM arrival at the entrance of Wal-Mart.
I will check back in later this weekend to let you know how successful I was. Oh, and to share some other stories from the week!

A $10 Shopping Spree for Shoes!
Actually.......it was $9.57! But more about that later!
The kids and I had a fun day. We started out at Anysa's Little Gym performance program where she did wonderfully! Luke was so excited that he actually got to enter through the holy glass doors! He did great staying with me and letting me record Anysa while he copied some of their wiggle moves from the sidelines. What was most exciting for Anysa is that our friend Pam and her two older daughters (who my children absolutely adore-oh, and you too Pam!) were able to come by for part of it.
Then we headed over for free ice cream-right after we ate lunch! While the kids played, we chatted.
I thought I was just on my way straight home when I was passing the resale shop and saw this,
ALL SHOES- $.50
So I quickly calculated the cost of my headache from taking 2 kids with me into a relatively crowded resale shop vs actually purchasing at retail the shoes I might find inside and well, the shoes were the better bargain!
Soooooooo, 7 pairs of shoes and 1 new bicycle later, we headed out the door for under $10. Uh, did I mention buying Luke a "new" bike for $5? Ok, I know he is perfectly happy riding sister's old girly bike, but I thought for only $5, I could make him so happy with a black and red bike. It's not perfect, but it was only $5!
Now we are home with one watching a movie and one sleeping. Guess I should actually clean the kitchen!
And don't forget to support your local resale shops where the money is used for good causes. You both benefit!

So I quickly calculated the cost of my headache from taking 2 kids with me into a relatively crowded resale shop vs actually purchasing at retail the shoes I might find inside and well, the shoes were the better bargain!
Soooooooo, 7 pairs of shoes and 1 new bicycle later, we headed out the door for under $10. Uh, did I mention buying Luke a "new" bike for $5? Ok, I know he is perfectly happy riding sister's old girly bike, but I thought for only $5, I could make him so happy with a black and red bike. It's not perfect, but it was only $5!
Now we are home with one watching a movie and one sleeping. Guess I should actually clean the kitchen!
And don't forget to support your local resale shops where the money is used for good causes. You both benefit!
